Creating a Welcoming Patio
Outdoor living feels like such a luxury in Southwest Manitoba. Our seasons include winter, fake spring, 2nd winter, spring, wind, summer, mosquitos, layers, and then back around to winter. It sure is nice to make the best of the beautiful weather when we have it. Here is a simple guide to get you thinking about true Canadian outdoor living.
A Structure
It is best to start with a deck or patio area. This will for sure help cut back on the amount of bugs that may fly your way. The options are really endless, from slate tile, brick, stamped concrete, wood or even crushed rock. Mark out your area (ideally close to an entry/exit of your home), and research your base options what could suit for the space you have allotted and within you budget.
Sun cover is important to enjoying your time outdoors. You can achieve this with a pergola, gazebo, roof, or even as simple as an umbrella.
Your Furniture
How many people do you hope to entertain in your outdoor space? Consider the style of seating and your arrangement. Will it be around a pool or firepit? Perhaps some lounge chairs for soaking in the sun, take measurements to see how many you could fit comfortably and still have space to move around them.
If creating more of a lounge area, a deep padded sectional, or rattan sofa with some accent chairs and a table would do well.
Something I like to consider when choosing outdoor pieces is how it will weather in our climate. If choosing something with cushions, chair covers or a patio box for storage is ideal for their longevity. It also helps to keep them clean from bugs and bird droppings. No one wants to head out to their patio on a beautiful day, with a home made, iced peach green tea lemonade in hand only to find their chairs are covered in droppings!
Tip: Create different areas to gather if your space allows. Some guests may love a plush accent chair to settle into, while others may like to sit at a table perched near some snacks!
The Finishing touches
The final details really will bring your outdoor living to life. Incorporate some flower pots, throw blankets for chilly evenings and some solar garden lights! That will be sure to create an enjoyable ambiance for your outdoor gathering! A snack counter or shelf with sunscreen, beverages and little treats will absolutely up the experience too. Who doesn’t love snacks, comfort and good conversation!
Enjoy the rest of summer and happy designing!
